Got a white European pressing and I also have issues with a few tracks. Buzzing bass or something like that, definitely disappointed because the rest of it sounds great.
I had the white version which sounded awful and returned it. Eventually picked this up and it sounds much better. Less sibilance.
Bought a copy of this on ebay and it just arrived. Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but it seems to have no warping whatsoever, so my hopes are up. An interesting detail however, is that I didn't notice until now that the marbelised blue version of the album has somewhat alternative artwork. It's something of a close up on the original art and has a very strange pixelated effect to it. It almost makes me wonder if my jacket is somehow misprinted? I'm not sure but I love it all the same.
All the vinyl editions of this record have this alternate artwork. I think the normal zoomed-out artwork looks better IMO.
Maybe I got lucky but my copy arrived today and it's nearly flawless! Great, dynamic sound, no warps, pops or crackles. Slight surface noise is present only at the beginning of Side A. Fortunately it disappears a few seconds into the first track and cannot be heard on the rest of the LP. Amazing record from an amazing band!
received mine yesterday, was a little weary of how it would sound after reading the reviews. Mine is quiet and no noticeable pops. Bass gets a bit saturated at parts but besides that its a decent pressing.
I have the white EU pressing and it sounds awful. Horrible static throughout the entire record, clicks and pops. It's unlistenable.
Received the white pressing today and mine is sightly warped. Only really affects the first three tracks (Intro, Interlude I, Tesselate) but gives the bass a slight static crackle. Honestly not much of an issue and hardly takes away from this fantastic album, but maybe go for a different pressing. Also the white colour makes it impossible to see where the tracks end so you can't place the needle on a specific one so I would recommended picking up the black one instead for sure!
Picked up the white version at JB HiFi in Australia. Really pretty terrible pressing, especially on the intro, as others have stated. Much of the joy of this album comes from the immaculate sound, so the last thing I want is a crappy sounding vinyl. Debating whether to return it and track down another pressing altogether...
I have the white vinyl and I don't have any issues with the sound at all. I think it's a great pressing. My only complaint is how tight the sleeve is which makes getting the vinyl in and out more difficult than most. An antistatic inner sleeves has made it easier. :)
Rolling Flipper
The prestigious Mercury Prize in 2012 was won by Alt-J, a young band from Leeds University. Their debut album An Awesome Wave was by the British and Irish professional jury chosen over plates of Ben Howard, Plan B and The Maccabees. Also on the other side of the North Sea was the music press pretty clear: An Awesome Wave came in virtually every eindejaarslijstje. For the Quartet it must have been a particularly exciting year with all sold out shows and high chart positions at home and abroad. All kinds of British folk and rock bands from the past were allowed to provide inspiration, but Alt-J had decided a private sound; catchy, atmospheric and sensitive. The pinched soul voice of singer Joe Newman, the band even more striking. The excellent song material did the rest. The titles of Breezeblocks, Tessel late and sounded aware Fitzpleasure obscure, but these songs became audience favorites. An Awesome Wave was thus the most promising rock debut from 2012.
I have the white pressing and it sounds exellent. I did not even clean the record before playing. I usually do, but this vinyl look perfectly clean.
Solid record. I really love the vibe of An Awesome Wave - it's calming and teasing at the same time, lazily playful. It sounds fantastic, too; I love the layering, chorus effect they've inserted in album. It sounds rich, heavy, and engulfing. The lyrics are also cryptic enough to keep you guessing whilst they spin their sonic web around you. Then there's the feeling of getting lost in the music. Sometimes it's great, but sometimes it leaves me feeling like I've lost track of something.
I just purchased another pressing of this lp. The version I have was not pressed at United (no circle U in the deadwax) and is much better than the other one I had and returned.
how is this pressing/? k h j k
Mine arrived completely warped and unplayable...They gave a full refund though.
Wonderful pressing, dead silent and well balanced, far more open-sounding than the cd ! I cleaned it right after unboxing, it had a hell lot of static !
fantastic album, but what a hell of a bad pressing (white vinyl)
So what's the verdict? ... which is the best pressing.. Europe or US, and in each case black or white vinyl?I don't want to buy a duffer, so your thoughts appreciated!
I got this album without knowing it was the white pressing. Unfortunately, it pops and crackles like hell all the way through. My advice to anyone thinking about picking it up: make sure you're buying the black vinyl!
Hey, I have the same problem. Bought it from amazon Germany... I just sent it back and hopefully the one they're sending back a one that sounds properly.
Are the labels intentionally printed a little off center?
After reading some reviews saying the quality of this pressing was poor I was very skeptical of buying it. I'll note the packaging is gorgeous however after putting this on my turntable for first time I also noticed the bad quality of the pressing. I thought, damn, poor purchase. After spending the night fiddling with my turntable I realized there wasn't enough weight on my stylus. I changed it to the appropriate weight and put on this record. Man, did my opinion change of this pressing. Sure it's a little bass heavy however, I don't notice any compression or distortion. I just changed the amount of bass on my Amplifier and it's great! I recommend this album, doesn't sound spectacular however it is much better than these reviews suggest.
Any one else have issues with this pressing? A few of my friends and I had problems with the discs being warped and skipping and I was wondering if anyone else had this issue or if it was somehow just a isolated incident.
Purchased through Amazon and am disappointed in the warp and surface noise. New Vinyl is just poorly made these days.
I did too!! I was wondering the same thing myself...
my copy has a lot of surface noise, is slightly warped and a bit off center. I really wish they would have pressed this lp at another pressing plant. URP are terrible. I plan on returning my lp.
I bought mine on amazon.ca and the disc shows a minor warp. No skipping though. It plays fine with some crackling noises.
Mine is just fine. No problems whatsoever. Acquired in Chile.
I LOVE this album. One of my favorites of all time, for sure. But the vinyl pressing of this sounds inferior to mp3/CD and that is rare. Anyone else notice this? It feels overly bassy/compressed at times and has surface noise. Am I alone in being confused by this?
